Nature . . .

. . . and time.

A vibrant forest scene with tall trees and a ground covered in colorful autumn leaves.

This my 12th year of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains after 26 years in the North Carolina Sandhills. It’s been an interesting unfolding of nature and time for me; nature in the wonderment of all the bits and pieces of my surroundings, time in the ageing process.

Nature and time: Things I usually take quite seriously.

I moved up here the first weekend of November, 2014 from the NC Sandhills where it was still so warm that I had to run the AC as we loaded the truck, My first weekend in the mountains, we had ice, snow, and more ice for an early taste of winter. My very first purchase up here was a Woolrich parka because I had not needed such outerwear before. I realized very quickly that I had a lot to learn about my new environment, the seasons, and the need for a new wardrobe.

I purchased my last home in the early months of 2015, but only after a lot of exploration and investigation. Somewhat of an old soul, this was a challenge for me wanting to keep some things the same and other things new. But I did find what I was looking for – a place where I could live in the tree tops throughout the four seasons, and after 12 years, I am still happy to be right where I am.

The biggest difference between the mountains and the Sandhills is the mark of the seasons. The Sandhills, although with beauty and wonderment of its own, is no comparison to the time and nature of the seasons on mountain time. You really have to learn to live with it – not, “put up with it”, but really live with it, appreciate, and value it. Even for an old soul, this is something you never really learn enough about.

Up here, the changes in the fall landscape seem to cause me to slow down. Now, in my 70th year of the four seasons, I deeply appreciate this. It is something I wish I had realized earlier in life.

Regardless of where you or I or anyone lives, the four seasons are a mark of growth, understanding, and wisdom – in that order, I think. We mark stations in life as places where we’ve gained a certain “knowing”. . . but not necessarily the wisdom that is bound to it. That, perhaps, takes another and another cycle of life.

I took this photo the first year I lived up here. As I looked out over the mountain tops, nature spoke and cautioned me to not forget this vista.

I took this photo the first year I lived up here. As I looked out over the mountain tops, nature spoke and cautioned me to not forget this vista.

And remember the ages these mountains have stood here. They are not to be ignored, so be quiet and listen to the wisdom that is here.

Puppy note clips and glitter wands.

Just to clarify what a Buddy Bag is and what’s in it:
A Buddy Bag is a curated grab bag of stationery and a few little fun things. Everything in it somehow is connected – some things by color; some by theme; and others by an idea. For sure, the bags are not just full of inventory I have too much of or stuff I need to get rid of in my shop. Many of the things are brand new items just made available by my suppliers. A lot of them are things I have acquired because I had an idea or were inspired by something in particular.

For example:
Last week, I filled an order for a gal I’ve known just about all my life. While finishing it up, I remembered that she has the cutest little puppy dog. I wished I had something to put in her bag to represent that.

Anyway, I mailed the package I had curated; then, immediately, starting looking for some items related to pets that I could, perhaps, include in the bags.

I found this precious puppy note clip that instantly fit the bill. I loved the shimmery multi-colors. It was so cute (like my friend/customer’s dog); and it made me kinda happy to look at it. I ordered four of them. Also, I found other puppies and dogs, and kittens, and ladybugs, cardinals, turtles, dragonflies – there’s so many cool things out there that I had not thought about.

You know, sometimes you just find your groove and there’s nothing else to do but go with it. My mind was on a roll. I couldn’t rest until I found certain compliments to the puppy clip. And I did find something that connects in a sublime sorta way.

Here’s the big reveal:
A glitter wand.
A stress reliever.
An anti-anxiety tool.
A sensory toy.
A joy-maker. A happy-maker.

I think everyone could use one of these.

I’ll end by saying that not every Buddy Bag will hold a puppy note clip or a glitter wand, but I can promise to curate something that speaks to you in some way, or, at least, that’s what I hope will happen.

Today through September 12, I’m including a FREE BUDDY BAG with every order from WriteMyLine. And Budster insists that I include a FREE GLITTER WAND too! (as long as my current supply lasts.)

That’s my way of saying how much I appreciate your business, especially as this online shop is a new venture for me.

So far, it’s been great. I’ve loved curating the Buddy Bags for my customers. Every bag has been different – a one of a kind: A joy-maker. A happy-maker.

Now, forward . . .

It’s been twenty years since writemyline.com first surfaced as a personal domain for a required class I was taking at Duke. I had no interest in taking a course that ate up an entire summer of Saturdays on campus, but it was required. I had no choice if I wanted to complete a certificate program in writing.

To make a long 20-year story short, writemyline has evolved into this – to what you are seeing on your screen right now. From editing doctoral dissertations, editing and proofreading too many manuscripts to count, writing marketing copy, and occasionally blogging, to being a vendor of journals and all associated things, particularly the analog variety. I’m happy to be here doing something so unlike a job that it feels like I’m on a holiday.

Now it feels like I’m on a holiday, after the Budster and I have been working our tails off for the last couple of months making room for and accumulating inventory. I’ve loved opening up the packages as they have arrived. I’ve not so much loved finding room to store them. It’s also been a baffling adventure turning a blog into a storefront. (I thought it would be a lot easier! What was I thinking!) But, anyway, we’ve finally arrived. And we’re ready to move forward with new friends and old ones, too.

So . . . WELCOME, FRIENDS! Thanks for visiting us!

Buddy and I are so glad you’re here to say browse our little shop and, perhaps, make a purchase. Even though there are a few items we’re waiting on, the shop is moving forward and opening its virtual doors on Saturday.

Thank you for being here and supporting our little shop. I, especially, hope you love the journals as much as I have loved acquiring them for you.

Be sure to stay in touch and let us hear from you.
Thanks, again.

P.S. WriteMyLine’s Facebook followers get a free Buddy Bag with each order from August 29 through September 12. Just leave me a note at check-out that you’d like your free gift!
